SRCW Nagaland celebrates National Girl Child Day 2014

Joining the rest of India, Nagaland celebrated the National Girl Child Day on 24th January, 2014 at Nerhe Model Village Council Hall, Chiephobozou, Kohima, Nagaland. The eventwasorganized by the Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB) and the State ResourceCentre for Women (SRCW) Nagaland under the theme, Cherishing Our Girl Child.

The event was attended by village heads, church leaders, women societies, children of all age groups and members of villages under Chiephobozou Block.Since the SRCW Nagaland’s Poorna Shakti Kendra (PSK) pilot project will be launched atChiephobozou Block, this was an opportunity for the SRCW and NSSWB to meet the peopleand hear from them.

SmtBanoVinito, the Chairperson of the NSSWB shared on the Significance of the Girl Child Day. While stressing on the need to strengthen and pave way for the girl child through education, she also pointed out that Naga girls do not have inheritance rights, and called on all parents to equip their Girl Child with education for their future security.

An IEC (Information, Education and Communication) material/ information leaflet wasdeveloped by the SRCW and NSSWB in the local Tenyidie Naga dialect, and distributed toall. The leaflet contained information concerning the girl child and her rights at the nationaland international levels; it highlighted various prevailing issues girls face in today’s societysuch aschild trafficking, child abuse, and teenage pregnancy; it also included statistics thatreveal the vulnerable state of the girl child in India, and within Nagaland. With thisinformation, people are urged to be equipped with proper information in order to protect anddefend our girl child, and in doing so, to protect the society and its conscience.
